HISTORY? AUTHENTICITY!
Back in the nineties a friend insisted on buying a part of an apartment in Brussels with him. I was only in my 20s and very reluctant but I jumped in. It was the start of a series of housing purchases and sales. All started with an authentic art deco apartment and authenticity has remained the core of my passion to restore.
By buying or renting with us you contribute in preserving a local heritage that we believe we should cherish.
RESTORE & ECOLOGY
We strive to restore more than renovate. Reuse more than produce new. It is better for the environment and keeps original character. Often previously made objects were built to last a lot longer and can often be repaired still rather than replaced. Restoring is often a delicate work of many hours and is not necessarily cheaper but it can be when the object is still in good condition. We will try to recover white tiles that are original even if they exist new as the aging gives the tiles character. In the end we offer housing with more luxury at comparable market price than a cheap, plastic "all in white" renovation.
To obtain this result we study what was the original materials used and colors applied. We have learnt a lot about buildings from mid 18th century to the 1980s. We appreciate hand blown glass and fine wooden windows over today's banal plastic ones. We find solutions to make it ecologically viable. We do not over-renovate or over-restore.
We like the story of an object and as such accept that a 200 year old tile will show its cracks or have pieces missing.
We value our planet and constantly think about improving our ecological footprint so your money will be spent on improving our properties and progressing in our sustainable thinking.
QUALITY & LOCAL
Decent materials are very important. We tend to go for bakelite for example rather than plastic. We spend hours looking for the right sink of the right period to match the existing parts. Zoom in, check the detail, perfectionism is a guarantee you'll enjoy for decades to come.
We work with local artisans but also with local materials. We will buy "Made in Portugal/Belgium" as much as we can. This can be the choice of plugs (Efapel), taps (Bruma) or electronics (Meireles) but also our furniture or tiles or much, much more. We buy from small specialist stores with individual service and who give character to our so beloved Lisbon/Brussels. We choose quality and future good service rather than quick buys in huge outlets.
Last but not least we are transparent. We take pictures during the works so you can see the high standard that has been used.
YOUR HAPPY HOME
We believe a house should feel like a warm home, not a museum or a store. Too often "style" wins from actually feeling good at your place. We go for interior design with a heart that understands the history of the city, street, building, house and room. Whether renting a room or an apartment, long or short term, we want you to be happy. We are a Superhost on Airbnb because we care. We would like you to have an experience rather than a "good stay". Egyptian cotton towels & sheets made in Portugal, organic shower gel, soaps from the oldest Portugese factories and so much more.
