Pombaline bathroom

Not all can go as planned... The restoration of the bathroom will take more than expected as the pipes dated from 1900 and there was a chance of problems in the future due to corrosion. The workmen carefully remove the 1900s tiles one by one so that they will put them back on after having changed the pipes. This also made the Pombaline structure visible. Those are the wooden crosses in the walls that are typical of the 18th century buildings that were built to be earthquake resistant, the first in their kind worldwide. The name comes from the Marquis of Pombal, an important man in Portuguese and Lisbon history.
